Getting To Know Ostriches And Their Breeding

In the zoological classification , ostrich is recognized as the largest bird in the world. The height of an adult male is 2.7-1.2 m in standing position. Usually the materials are a little smaller. Adult ostrich weight varies from 86 to 145 kg depending on species.

During the 20th century, 5 different species of ostriches were introduced, including:

1-Masai ostrich

Masai ostriches are found in eastern Africa and extending from central Kenya to southwest Tanzania. The naked skin and the naked neck of male bird are pink and becomes red during the mating season. The tails feathers of this breed are white, and there is a discordant, brownish-colored earth feathers. There is a white ring of feather on the neck of this breed.

2-Somali ostrich

The scatter of this breed is northeast of Kenya and southeast of Ethiopia and is easily recognizable by the Masai ostrich. This breed has legs with blue and gray skin. The khaki feathers do not exist in the tail of this breed and the wings of the tail are bright white. There is also no white ring around the neck in the Somali ostrich.

3-South African Ostrich

Mostly live around the Guinea River. This breed also has a blue neck, and easily subdued.

4-North African Ostrich

Distributed in the southern part of sub-Saharan Africa and in parts of Cاte d’Ivoire and Mauritania to Ethiopia. This species is the largest ostrich species and is very similar to the Masai ostrich and the neck of this breed is light pink.

5-Arabian ostriches

They lived in the Arab deserts and neighboring countries of Iran and are now extinct.

breedable and profitable ostrich species

breed-able and profitable species have be recognizing since breeding them in the South African fields from 1775 . Algeria’s first breeding farm was established in Algeria in the in1857, and some activities have been carried out in its first selective breeding in South Africa since 1863. The first specialized selective breeding farm was established in 1937. Over the years, researchers have came up with three profitable species by mixing different breeds, named the Red Neck, Blue Neck and Black Neck of South Africa, each with their own species characteristics that are briefly mentioned.

Blue Neck Ostrich:

This breed is mostly bred in Zimbabwe. The main characteristics of this breed include a large, bulky body and a long neck and being tall . Feather follicles on the skin in this breed is more widespread. This breed has a lot of meat production efficiency and its behavior is predictable and tractable but quality of feather in this species is low. This species shows better adaptation to the cold than other breeds.

Red Neck Ostrich:

This species has a much larger size than any other commercial species . The breeding and hatching potential of this species is less, and are aggressive so difficult to tract. Produced chickens of this species have little survival in breeding environments. The puberty in this species is longer than the other species and as a result production and efficiency take more time which play an important role in the profitability of the farms. This bird has bright pink skin and neck. this species Most breeding ostriches in the American continent are.

Black Neck Ostrich:

The black neck race, which has been the result of 130 years of selective breeding efforts in the South African country, has come from a mix of two North African ostrich species and a South African ostrich species also known as the African Black Ostrich. African black neck ostriches have a shorter neck and a tighter body. Feathers of this species have a very high quality and the skin has a proper quality. The feather color of this species is darker and lighter than other species , so mostly this species is used for breeding in the world today .

Important tips about ostrich breeding

1. situation:

Ostriches are very fast runners. They have a great interest in running, so you have to provide a large area for living and reproduction, and protecting the area with fence to Prevent them from escaping.

Type Roofed section Resort
Productive ostrich 3 months to the end of the period 6 Square meters 160 Square meters
Productive & Fattening ostrich From birth to 30 days 0.5 Square meters 2 Square meters
30 days to 3 months 1 Square meters 10 Square meters
Productive ostrich 3 months to the end fattening 2 Square meters 20 Square meters

2. Reproduction

Because of the high costs of setting up ostrich breeding, we recommend that you start with a low-scale breeding site and you should start with at least one male ostrich and one female ostrich. It is best to learn how to reproduce ostriches first.

3. Nutrition:

You can use fruits, seeds, leaves, tubers and all kinds of small animals to feed your ostriches. You can also enjoy ostrich-specific foods to grow and feed your ostriches.
The modern ostrich breeding system uses a lot of hydroponic fodder. Positive feedback on the use of hydroponic fodder has been observed by performing samples of hydroponic growth chambers in different regions of Iran. For more information on hydroponic fodder click on the link below.

4. Healthcare:

In fact, ostriches have a very strong immune and defense system and are less likely to get sick. If a veterinarian is not available for health care, they will not be harmed and you can rest assured that the cost involved in treating them is included in your income.

5. Up-to-date information:

Ostrich breeding is a special business, not like other animal farms. As a beginner you may face confusing and unpredictable situations. To succeed as an ostrich breeder, it is essential to access up-to-date information.

Five advantage of ostrich breeding

1High efficiency relative to investment

You can get your initial investment in breeding ostriches faster than other animals, such as pigs or cows. An ostrich alone can lay 40 eggs in a year and within 14 months chickens can gain weight and size. The profitability of ostrich breeding is as high as its popularity. There is high demand for live ostrich purchases by those who want to start up their own ostrich farm, which remains in demand on the world market.

2Selling ostrich eggs

Fresh ostrich eggs for eating are sold for about $35–50 a piece. A single ostrich egg is the equivalent of 2-dozen chicken eggs! According to the American Ostrich Association, a single bird can lay 40–60 eggs a year. Some cross-breeds have even been known to average 70 eggs a year! At 50 eggs a year for $40/egg, each ostrich can give you an extra $2000/year. An ostrich can lay eggs for about 30 years. Over the life of an ostrich that’s $60000!

3Ostrich meat

The average ostrich, typically butchered at 14 months of age, will produce about 75–130 lbs of meat. Ground ostrich meat ranges from $10–15/lb, with filets at $25–50/lb and tenderloins upwards of $50/lb. At the average wholesale price of $20/lb, that’s a minimum of $1500 per bird.

4Ostrich Feathers and Leather

Another ostrich product that is in high demand is leather and feathers for fashion items. NC State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences estimates that the average bird will produce 14 sq. ft. of leather at $40/SF and 4 lbs of feathers at $40/lb. That’s $1470 per bird!

5Easy breeding

You may think that they may only be profitable based on the products they produce and it is very difficult to grow them, but this is far from true. In fact, as profitable as ostrich breeding is, it is as easy as breeding ostrich. All you need for ostrich breeding is adequate space, proper nutrition, and health care.
